The President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan has called on the Federal Government to focus on improving the security situation in the country by adequately equipping security agencies. He said this at the resumption of Senate proceedings after the upper chamber’s two months annual recess.
Speaking on the spate of kidnapping, ethnic conflicts, rural and highway banditry, herdsmen and farmers’ conflict and cattle rustling, the senate president said a review of the nation’s security architecture was crucial.
While commending security agencies for their efforts towards tackling the security challenges,the Senate President suggested that adequate funding, and key structural changes will be needed to enable them perform at the optimum.
The Senate therefore set up an ad-hoc committee to review the arrangement of the nation’s security architecture with a view to finding lasting solutions to the evolving security challenges across the Country.
Other issues that came to the fire on the senate president’s address included unemployment, inter-ethnic conflict, alarming rate of out of school children which were described as none partisan challenges.
Meanwhile, Senator Lawan assured that the 2020 appropriation bill will be passed into law by December 2019. He also hinted that all the 69 standing committees will be inaugurated tomorrow, Wednesday 25th September 2019.
