The Nigerian Communications Commission has reduced the numbers of improperly plus pre/un-registered SIM Cards from a whopping 9.2million to a meager 2.4million within a week that the news was brought to its notice.
The Minister of Communications, Dr. Isa Pantami revealed this during the presentation and oath-taking of four new Members of Board of Commissioners of the NCC, in Abuja while commending the Telecom Regulator for living to its billing as a forthright Regulatory Body and swinging to immediate action. The new NCC Board Members were presented to the Minister by Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye, in company of the Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, Clement Baiye, a non-executive Commissioner on the Board of NCC, other Senior Management Members of the Commission, with the oath of office administered on the Board Members.
They include; Engr. Ubale Maska; (Executive Commissioner, Technical Services); Prof. Millionaire Abowei; Salman Abdul-Azeez; Aliyu Abubakar and three of who are non-executive Commissioners. The Minister charged the new Board Members to work in synergy and work in line with the vision and agenda of President Mohammadu Buhari especially in the areas of Security, improving the Economy and fighting Corruption, while emphasizing on the importance of ICT and its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Country.
According to the Minister, ICT has contributed 13.86 percent to the country’s GDP and this, he said, was an encouraging development. Generally, non-oil’s GDP contribution to the economy was 91 percent. “The NCC has played a significant role in this direction and I will enjoin the NCC Board Members and Management to always challenge yourselves to exceed current or previous successes.” he added.
