The National Broadcasting Commission has warned broadcast media to be weary of the kind of news they disseminate, putting into cognisance the codes and ethics of broadcasting. Addressing cross session of participants at the Commission’s 5th annual lecture series on Tuesday in Abuja, the Director-General of the NBC, Modibbo Kawu, and Chairman, Alhaji Ikra Bilbis, said the NBC would not spare broadcast stations airing contents that contravene the Nation’s broadcasting code.
In his presentation, Bilbis said,
“There are a number of initiatives that the commission is focusing on in order to bring broadcasting in Nigeria at par with the rest of the world. We must again ponder at the power of the broadcast media which can affect people’s thinking and behaviour for good or evil. Such a medium with monumental influence on society cannot be unregulated.”
The DG further pledged his support for the Nigerian Broadcasting Community in-spite of the challenges the industry has been faced with.
“We endeavour to assist the Nigerian broadcasting community as well as the general populace that the industry serves, to come to terms with the realities of social existence, in our country, as we make the effort to address the challenges of underdevelopment and nation building. There has never been a simplistic formula to confront the hydra-headed challenges of development in any society.”
The lecture which is the 5th in its series themed; ”Contemporary Challenges of the Nigerian state: Need for Constructive Broadcasting, examines the contemporary trends of socio-political developments in the country, as well as their reflections in the programming and news content of Nigerian broadcasters. The lecture had in attendance stakeholders in the broadcast industry.
