The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami has revealed that the Federal Executive Council is on the verge of addressing challenges been faced in the Telecoms Industry.
Addressing participants at the special reception organized by the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) in honour of the Minister to formally welcome him as the supervisory Minister of the telecom industry.
Pantami said he presented some of the challenges facing the telecommunications sector before the Federal Executive Council (FEC), he said actions are being taken to address them, while pledging to work with all stakeholders in the sector appealing for their support, suggestions and constructive criticisms wherever necessary, to promote the growth of the sector for the betterment of all Nigerians.
President Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) while acknowledging the Minister for the roles he has been playing ever since his assumption of office as the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, took opportunity to discuss their major challenges which includes telecom infrastructures security, multiple taxations, right of ways, call diversion, high data charges, and issues of illegal data depleting, among others.
According to Teniola “The telecommunication industry is presently considered to be the fastest growing sector in the Nigerian economy and contributes over 12% to the national GDP. But it is an industry facing series of challenges for which operators have consistently sought government’s intervention”.
The highlight of the day was the presentation of a certificate of support and a live portrait of Dr Pantami to the Honourable Minister on behalf of the President, National Executive Council Members and Member Companies who promise to pledge their support for the development of the sector in Nigeria.
The special reception which graced industry captains including the Executive Vice Chairman Nigerian Communications Commission, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, Musa Fuktur Istifanus, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy; Kashifu Abdullahi, Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agencies (NITDA); and Dr. Abimbola Alale, Managing Director, Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT).
Other key personalities at the reception to honour the Minister include Yusuf Kazaure, Managing Director/CEO, Galaxy Backbone Limited; Adebisi Adegbuyi, Postmaster-General of the Federation and CEO Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST); Ayuba Shuaibu, Acting Executive Secretary, Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), Directors from various agencies in the Ministry and its agencies, ATCON executive members, CEOs of telecommunication companies, and other industry stakeholders and the host of others was also part of the move for the telecom industry captains.
