The Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen have called for appropriate measures in addressing cancer and other health related challenges confronting women in the society.
The Minister made the call at the flag off of the 2019 breast cancer awareness month at the National hospital in Abuja.
She explained that the major cause of premature deaths among women apart from maternal mortality are breast and cervical cancers.
Dame Pauline however said effective knowledge and early detection will help reduce the incidence of death amongst women and girls in Nigeria.
Also, Minister of Health, Osagie Ehinare said government is responding to this challenge.
He attributed causes of death to lack of awareness, late presentation, financial constraints, religious/traditional beliefs, inadequate equipped cancer managing centres among others.
Breast cancer awareness month is marked in countries across the world every October to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care for the disease.
